OPT unemployment days: a practical job-search plan for a 90-day clock

Published October 13, 2026. General information, not legal advice. Rules change, so confirm yours with your school's international student office (your DSO) or an immigration attorney.

If you are on OPT without a job, the unemployment limit turns a normal job search into a deadline. This guide converts the limit into working days and application volume, then lays out a plan for the first two weeks. It does not interpret anyone's individual status. That is a question for your DSO.

What the rule says

According to DHS Study in the States:

  • On post-completion OPT, you may accrue at most 90 days of unemployment.
  • On the STEM OPT extension, the allowance is 150 days in total, and it includes any days already counted during post-completion OPT. Someone who spent 60 days between jobs has 90 left.
  • SEVIS counts each calendar day without employer information, looking back to your OPT start date.

"Calendar day" matters for planning: weekends and holidays are not free days.

What 90 and 150 days mean in working time

You can only apply on days employers are reading applications, so it helps to convert the clock into working days.

  • 90 calendar days is about 12.9 weeks, or roughly 64 working days.
  • 150 calendar days is about 21.4 weeks, or roughly 107 working days.

Those are approximations before holidays. Here is how the post-completion allowance shrinks as days are used:

Unemployment days usedDays left (of 90)Approx. weeks left
09012.9
30608.6
45456.4
60304.3
75152.1

Most people lose the first two weeks to setup: deciding what roles to target, rebuilding a resume, and learning what applications actually ask. That is why a plan for the first 14 days matters.

The application arithmetic

This is arithmetic, not a prediction. More applications do not guarantee interviews.

Applications per working dayOver about 64 working days
5About 320
10About 640
25About 1,600

A tailored application takes real time, so your daily number depends on how much time you can give it. The useful question is not "how many" but "how many to roles I could realistically get."

A two-week plan for the start of your search

  1. Days 1–2: Pick two or three target job titles. Spreading across ten titles produces ten weak resumes.
  2. Days 2–4: Build one base resume per title from your real experience. Do not add anything that is not true.
  3. Days 3–5: Write your exclusions and constraints down. Locations, salary floor, remote or on-site, and any role types you will not take.
  4. Day 5 onward: Check whether employers fit your situation. For example, a STEM OPT employer must be enrolled in E-Verify and sign a training plan (Form I-983), per USCIS.
  5. From day 5: Record every application. Keep the job link, the resume version you sent and the submission confirmation. Without a record you cannot tell what is working.
  6. Day 14: Review. Which titles got replies? Which got none? Shift your effort toward what responds.

Common mistakes

  • Applying to everything. Applications to roles you cannot realistically get use up days you cannot get back.
  • No record. If you did not save the job link and the resume version, you cannot follow up or learn from it.
  • Waiting to "feel ready." The clock counts every calendar day, including the ones spent polishing.
  • Treating one source as truth about your status. Rules change and forum posts go out of date, so your DSO is the right check.

When a done-for-you service makes sense

If you are working part-time, studying, or simply cannot do 20 tailored applications a day yourself, a service can cover the volume. Whichever one you consider, ask:

  • Is a person or a script submitting the applications?
  • Do I get a record of each application?
  • What is the refund policy, in writing?
  • Do they ever ask for my account passwords? (They should not.)

Frequently asked questions

How many unemployment days are allowed on OPT?

According to DHS Study in the States, post-completion OPT allows at most 90 days of unemployment. The STEM OPT extension allows 150 days in total, including days already counted during post-completion OPT.

Do weekends count toward OPT unemployment days?

DHS says SEVIS counts each calendar day without employer information, so do not plan around weekends being free. Confirm how your days are being counted with your DSO.

How many working days is 90 calendar days?

Roughly 64 working days, or about 12.9 weeks, before holidays. 150 calendar days is roughly 107 working days.

Does applying to more jobs guarantee an interview?

No. Volume and match quality both matter. Applications sent to roles you could not realistically get are wasted days on a running clock.
